Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a never-ending journey of growth and discovery. As a passionate BJJ practitioner, I recently had the privilege of attending the BJJ Summer Week , the biggest BJJ camp in the world, bringing nearly 1000 persons to Cagliari and some of the best professor in the world to teach.
In this blog post, I’ll share my experiences and insights from this incredible camp.
It was my second time and the 8th edition of the camp.
Read about my first time here.
Training
The BJJ Summer Week featured a lineup of world-class instructors, each bringing their unique perspective and expertise to the mats. From black belts to world champions, they offered a wealth of knowledge that made the camp an unforgettable learning experience.
Professors 2023:
Bruno Malfacine, Tata Wan Ribeiro, Daniel Strauss, Michelle Nicolini, Maggie Grindatti, Marco Bancone, Kaynan Duarte, Bernardo Serrini, Dario Bacci, Flavio Santiago, filipe Pena, Vitor Ribeiro,Robson Moura, Paulo Miyao, Bianca Basilio, Roberto Traven, Demian Maia and Lucas Leite each professor guided 2 seminars during the week.
The seminars covered a wide range of techniques, from fundamental concepts to advanced strategies. We delved into takedowns, guard passes, sweeps, and submissions, all carefully explained and demonstrated by our talented instructors. What set those seminars apart was the structured curriculum that allowed participants of all levels, from white belts to black belts, to take away valuable lessons.
Rolling with fellow attendees and some professors was a highlight of the seminar. There’s something magical about sparring with practitioners from different backgrounds, each with their unique style and game. These sessions allowed us to put the techniques we learned into practice and adapt them to our own game. Rolling during the seminars and on the extra mat space was not just about competition but also about building connections and friendships with like-minded individuals.
A Culinary Journey of Pure Delight
The food in Cagliari is a journey through history, culture, and the breathtaking landscapes of Sardinia. From the freshness of the sea to the heartiness of the land, Cagliari’s cuisine is a testament to the region’s rich and diverse culinary traditions. So, when you find yourself in this enchanting corner of Italy, be prepared to embark on a culinary adventure like no other. Cagliari’s food is not just amazing; it’s an experience you’ll treasure forever.
A Symphony of Seafood: Cagliari, situated along the stunning coastline of Sardinia, boasts an unparalleled bounty of fresh seafood. The daily catch from the Mediterranean Sea graces the tables of local restaurants, delivering a symphony of flavors that is simply divine.
Fregola con Arselle: One of the dishes that exemplify the coastal charm of Cagliari is «Fregola con Arselle.» This Sardinian specialty features small, toasted pasta pearls called «fregola» cooked with tiny clams, garlic, parsley, and a dash of local olive oil. The result is a delightful marriage of flavors that captures the essence of the sea.
Culurgiones: Sardinia is known for its unique pasta creations, and «culurgiones» is a prime example. These handmade pasta parcels are typically filled with a mixture of potato, pecorino cheese, mint, and other local ingredients. They’re often served with a simple tomato sauce and grated pecorino on top, creating a taste that’s both hearty and exquisite.
Sa Panada: For those who appreciate rustic, traditional dishes, «sa panada» is a must-try. It’s a savory pie filled with a mixture of lamb or pork, potatoes, and a medley of spices, all encased in a flaky pastry crust. This dish showcases the hearty, earthy flavors of Sardinia.
Local Wines: The food in Cagliari pairs beautifully with the region’s wines. Sardinia is known for producing some remarkable wines, such as Vermentino, Cannonau, and Nuragus. These wines complement the flavors of the local cuisine, enhancing the dining experience.
Desserts that Delight: After savoring a satisfying main course, be sure to explore the dessert offerings of Cagliari. Traditional Sardinian sweets, such as «seadas» (deep-fried pastries filled with pecorino and drizzled with honey) and «amaretti» (almond cookies), are simply irresistible.
The Culture of Cagliari’s Food: In Cagliari, food isn’t just sustenance; it’s an integral part of the culture. Meals are often enjoyed leisurely, with friends and family, and accompanied by lively conversations and laughter. The people of Cagliari take pride in their culinary heritage, and you can taste the love and tradition in every bite.
What else?
Beyond the mats, the BJJ Summer week provided ample opportunities for bonding and socializing. During lunch breaks, dinner and after the training sessions, I connected with other BJJ enthusiasts, sharing stories, tips, and laughter. These connections are a significant part of what makes BJJ so special. Thanks also to the BJJSW crew for the extraordinaire trip to the countryside of Cagliari, where we learned a lot about the culture of the island.
