BJJ in Pula

July, 2015

Enjoy the beach, eat a lot and train.

Duration: 8 days, 7 nights
Location: Pula,Cro

Enjoying a summer in the hometown of my teammate Brane.

An 8-hour drive brought me to the beautiful village of Medulin. Medulin is located directly on the ocean.

Thanks to Brane who know a lot of the locals we managed to dive, ride jet ski und do some wakeboarding.

And of course, we were able to train with his coach in Pula.

Training

In the week we managed to train 3 times together with Aleksandar Matteoni.

At this time his team was located at Trojan Free Fighters.

Nowadays Matteoni is training at Lotus Club Jiu Jitsu in Pula Croatia.

During the summer the most people were on vacation but we had the pleasure to train with the ones that were staying in Pula.

Food and drinks

Seafood

Being a coastal town, Medulin boasts a wealth of fresh seafood dishes:

  • Grilled fish: Freshly caught fish such as sea bass, dorado, or sardines, grilled simply with olive oil, garlic, and herbs.
  • Scampi and shellfish: Often prepared «buzara» style, which is a method of cooking seafood with white wine, garlic, parsley, and breadcrumbs.

Pasta and Risotto

Italian influence is strong in Istrian cuisine:

  • Fuži: A type of homemade Istrian pasta, typically served with truffles, cream, or a hearty meat sauce like žgvacet (a rich stew of chicken or beef).
  • Risotto: Often made with seafood, asparagus, or mushrooms.

Meat Dishes

While seafood is predominant, there are also traditional meat dishes:

  • Istrian prosciutto: Dry-cured ham that is often served with olives and cheese as a starter.
  • Ćevapi: Small grilled meat sausages made of pork, beef, or lamb, typically served with onions, sour cream, and ajvar (a pepper-based condiment).

Truffles

The forests of Istria are famous for both black and white truffles:

  • Dishes with truffles: Pasta, risottos, and omelets commonly feature truffles when in season.

Olive Oil and Wine

Istria is known for its high-quality olive oil and wines:

  • Olive oil: Often drizzled over dishes and used in cooking.
  • Wine: Local varieties like Malvazija and Teran are popular and pair excellently with local dishes.

Desserts

  • Fritule: Small deep-fried dough balls flavored with rum or citrus zest, often enjoyed during holidays and festivals.
  • Kroštule: Fried pastry strips dusted with powdered sugar.

Things we did

We could also enjoy some rides with a jet ski because one of his friends owned one just where we lived.

Another thing I really loved to do was wakeboarding on the wake park.

But the best thing we did was diving. It was my first time ever! Brane knew some guys owning a dive school and managed a dive for us.
